Understanding Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

If you decide on hysterectomy, your doctor may suggest using a type of surgery called laparoscopy. This method has many benefits compared to open surgery. These include a faster recovery and less time in the hospital.

What Is Hysterectomy?

Hysterectomy is surgery to remove the uterus (womb). Part or all of the uterus may be removed. At the same time, other reproductive organs may be removed. Be aware that having a hysterectomy means that you will not be able to become pregnant in the future. Discuss all of your treatment options with your doctor.

What Is Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a type of surgery that uses very small incisions in the abdomen. A long, slender device called a laparoscope is inserted through one of these incisions. A light and a tiny camera are attached to the laparoscope. These let the surgeon view pictures of the inside of the abdomen on a screen. Other tools are inserted through the incisions. These tools are used to perform the surgery.

Understanding Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

Laparoscopy lets you avoid having a large incision in the abdomen. This "open" surgery is called abdominal hysterectomy. Compared to open surgery, laparoscopy may:

  • Require less time in the hospital or surgery center.

  • Offer a faster recovery.

  • Cause less internal scarring and smaller visible scars.

  • Cause less postoperative pain.

  • Have a lower risk of complications.

Risks and Complications of Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

  • Side effects from anesthesia

  • Infection

  • Bleeding, with a possible need for a transfusion

  • Blood clots

  • Damage to the bladder, bowel, ureters, or nearby nerves

  • Need for a second surgery
